U.S. Employment Declined in April, but at the Slowest Pace Since October

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that national employment declined in April by 539,000 jobs, and that the U.S. unemployment rate rose from 8.5 to 8.9 percent.

About 5.7 million jobs have been lost since the recession began in December 2007. April's job losses were large and widespread across nearly all major private-sector industries. However, April's decline was the smallest monthly decline since last October - possibly indicating the rate of job losses across the country is starting to slow.
