Business Openings and Closings

From restaurants and coffee shops to fueling stations and a new OSU Beaver Store (though personally I'm more likely to visit a Duck store), this week's Around the State business announcements cover a variety of industries throughout the state.

Some of the openings in this week's report include:
  • The Cupping Room, a coffee shop, opened in southeast PortlandNeighborhood Notes, 10/1/2013
  • Chrysalis Coffee opened in McMinnvilleNews-Register, 9/12/2013
  • Chaucer Foods, a maker of freeze-dried ingredients and croutons, plans to open a plant in Forest Grove that could employ more than 70 people. The Oregonian, 9/12/2013
  • Fred Meyer in Coos Bay opened a fueling center. It is expected to employ 25 workers. KCBY, 9/24/2013
  • Coastal Farm and Ranch will build a $5.2-million, 40,000-square-foot store in Roseburg that will replace its current store. It will add 20 workers. The News-Review, 9/24/2013
  • Community Bank opened a loan production office in The Dalles. The Dalles Chronicle, 9/18/2013
  • Tide Land Dairy, a goat dairy farm, opened in Tillamook County. It's owned and operated by two teenage brothers. Headlight-Herald, 9/4/2013
  • A new, 50,000-square-foot OSU Beaver Store opened in Corvallis. It employs about 150 people, many of whom are part-time student workers. Corvallis Gazette-Times, 9/21/2013
A few of the closures or layoffs include:
  • Smokey's Pizza in Hazel Dell closed. It employed about 30 people. The Columbian, 9/30/2013
  • Willamette Education Service District will lay off 10 teachers, two classified staff, and one administrative position at Hillcrest and MacLaren youth correctional facilities in Salem and Woodburn. Statesman Journal, 10/2/2013
  • Furniture West in La Grande will close. The Observer, 9/18/2013
  • Best Burger and BBQ in Gresham closed. The Outlook, 9/24/2013
  • Rising Phoenix Biofuels in Phoenix closed. Ashland Daily Tidings, 9/13/2013
