October Job Gains Total 80,000 for U.S.

The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly employment news release reports that the U.S. added 80,000 jobs in October. The unemployment rate dipped slightly to 9.0 percent from 9.1 percent in September. The jobless rate has ranged between 9.0 percent and 9.2 percent since April.The private sector gained 104,000 jobs over the month, while government continued its decline with a loss of 24,000 jobs. Professional and business services (+32,000) saw the largest gains over the month. Construction experienced the largest private-sector losses, with 20,000 fewer jobs in October.

The initial employment estimates were revised up from +57,000 to +104,000 in August and from +103,000 to +158,000 in September. These revisions increase national employment growth by an additional 102,000 jobs over the past two months.
