U.S. Employment Gains in July

According this morning's Employment Situation news release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 117,000 in July. The gains follow little growth nationwide over the prior two months. Job gains occurred in health care (+31,000 jobs), retail trade (+26,000), manufacturing (+24,000), and mining (+9,000). Government employment continued to trend down over the month (-37,000).

The number of unemployed persons (13.9 million) and the unemployment rate (9.1%) changed little in July. The BLS notes that the U.S. unemployment rate has shown little definitive movement since April.
