Oregon's Veterans: Unemployment and Labor Force Participation

The average annual unemployment rate for Oregon's veterans ages 20 and over was 8.3 percent in 2010. Across the U.S., veterans faced a slightly higher rate (8.7%). In recent years, the roles have been reversed: the unemployment rate for Oregon veterans exceeded the national rate in six of the last eight years.

Nationwide, veterans experience a lower unemployment rate than nonveterans. Between 2003 and 2010, the veterans' unemployment rate sat at least 0.3 percentage point below the rate for nonveterans each year. In Oregon, the picture looks a bit more mixed. From 2003 to 2005, veterans in the state saw higher jobless rates than nonveterans. In subsequent years, Oregon has fallen in line with the national trend.
