Agriculture and casino expansions

Recent state and local news stories show expansion in statewide agriculture and regional gaming.

A report from Oregon State University shows that agriculture increased to 15 percent of the statewide economy in 2009. Agriculture's share of Oregon's total sales was 11 percent in 2008. The OSU study also showed that agriculture either directly or indirectly supported nearly 261,000 jobs statewide in 2009. The Associated Press article on the KATU website provides additional details.

The Wildhorse Resort & Casino near Pendleton is undergoing a $45-million, 10-story upgrade. The 184,000-square-foot expansion is expected to add 116 new jobs. The growing casino and a handful of other tribal enterprises mark the Umatilla Indian Reservation's growing role as a regional economic engine, according to an article from The Oregonian.
