A Portrait of Unemployment Insurance Recipients in 2009

In the summer of 2009, about 75 percent of the state's unemployed residents received unemployment insurance (UI) benefits.

More than 366,000 people received UI benefits in 2009, which is a record number. In total, the state paid about 2.7 billion dollars in benefits.

Here are a few interesting facts:
• 64 percent of recipients were male
• A construction or manufacturing company was the most recent major employer for 38 percent of the recipients
• Many recipients were in their 30s or 40s; few were under 20 or over 60
• About one-in-five people who received benefits in 2009 were unemployed longer than 26 weeks.

If you're wondering about the relationship between education level and UI benefits, or if you just want to learn more, you can check out the full article (written by Economist Mary Wood, (503) 947-1975; Mary.M.Wood@state.or.us).
