National unemployment rate unchanged in February

Nonfarm payroll employment saw little change (-36,000 jobs) in February, and the unemployment rate held at 9.7 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly employment situation summary released today.

Employment fell in construction and information, while temporary help services added jobs. Severe winter weather in parts of the country may have affected payroll employment and hours; however, it is not possible to precisely quantify the net impact of winter storms on these measures.

Quick Facts from the February Report:
- Unemployment rates for adult men (10%) and adult women (8%) were essentially unchanged over the month.

- About one in four unemployed persons has been looking for work 27 weeks or longer.

- The number of underemployed workers (people who part-time but want full-time employment) rose from 8.3 million to 8.8 million.
