Where Will the Jobs Be?

Without a doubt, this is an interesting period in Oregon's history to forecast employment trends. As we work our way through what may be seen as a "jobless" economic recovery, there are job openings today and in the state's future, but perhaps not as many as most would like to see.

From 2006 to 2008, employment in Oregon expanded by about 12,000 jobs, but it will take years to recover from our current economic tumble. Overall, employment is expected to see a positive trend, with growth of about 9 percent from 2008 to 2018.

Growth openings, which are caused by a new business opening or an existing business expanding, are expected to total 163,000 over the next ten years. In addition to growth openings, over 431,000 job openings are expected due to the need to replace workers who leave their occupation. They could leave for a variety of reasons, including retirement.

Detailed forecast tables are available on www.QualityInfo.org. To find them, go to the Publications page and look for "Regional Employment Projections by Industry and Occupations 2008-2018." You will find employment data for more than 700 occupations and all 15 workforce regions.

I agree that this is a tough time for everyone. I hope to be one of those Portland carpet cleaning businesses that will be able to expand and hire employees in the year.
