If you're looking for a new place to eat or a store to purchase clothes or furniture, this week's Around the State provides a list of several new businesses across the state:
  • Drawstrings of Malibu, a store offering cotton leisure wear, opened in Sisters. The Nugget Newspaper, 8/17/2013
  • Sons of Beer, a growler fill station that also serves food, opened in Prineville. Central Oregonian, 8/13/2013
  • Nehalem Beehive, a tea and coffee bar, opened in Nehalem. Headlight-Herald, 8/14/2013
  • Trudy's Living Room, a furniture store, opened in Wilsonville. The Oregonian, 8/18/2013

  • Christopher David Experience opened in downtown Portland. It offers furniture, flowers, interior design services, and a cafĂ©. Portland Business Journal, 8/21/2013
Unfortunately, the announcements include a couple layoffs and closures:
  • Tasty Bake Inc., a Baker City company that makes pizza crusts, laid off a large number of employees. The workforce reduction was related to a local cryptosporidium outbreak that caused a significant loss of clientele. Baker City Herald, 8/19/2013
  • As many as two dozen employees were laid off at Heinz Frozen Foods in Ontario. Argus Observer, 8/18/2013
  • The Anderson Place Market Place in Roseburg closed. The News-Review, 7/25/2013
  • Abrahams and Duffy, a women's and men's clothing store in northeast Portland, closed. The Oregonian, 8/18/2013
