Portland's Alternative Modes of Transportation

Today's local news articles come from The Oregonian and cover alternative transportation in the Portland metro area.

The first article reports on all the new car sharing services coming to Portland. RelayRides is one of several similar companies slated to open in the near future. Getaround, Wheelz, and Car2go are also planning to arrive in Portland by the end of the year, joining Zipcar, the city's first resident car sharing service.

The next article summarizes recent research on Census commuting data, which show that Seattle beats Portland in green commuting. Although Portland has more cyclists, Seattle has more more walkers, as well as more residents that carpooled and took public transportation to work. Between 2006 and 2010, about 12 percent of working Portlanders took public transport. You can get more details from sustainable-growth think tank Sightline's full post, or by downloading the Census commuting data.
