Startups and Local Government Finance

Today's local news highlights include a new Central Oregon startup incubator and a study on the financial state of Oregon cities.

A piece in The Oregonian announced that VentureBox, a startup lab, will launch next month in Bend. A series of 12-week courses will be offered to the inaugural class of seven companies, most of which work with online and mobile technologies. Funding will be covered by $40,000 in grants, private pledges, and a $1,500 tuition fee per participant. You can learn more about the venture in the full article.

A recent report titled "State of the Cities" by the League of Oregon Cities finds that many continue to struggle financially as local revenues decline, city workforces shrink, and public service demands rise. An analysis of financial data and survey data reveals that general fund revenues in the cities examined dropped by 0.57 percent over the past five fiscal years, while governmental fund revenues shrank by 4 percent.
