Business Announcements with Big Employment Impacts

This week's edition of Around the State has several announcements that impact large numbers of workers.
  • Royal Caribbean plans to hire 180 people at its Springfield call center this fall in anticipation of "wave season," January through March – the busiest time of year for booking cruises. The Register-Guard, 11/4/2011
  • Construction will begin on Northgate Marketplace, an 80,900-square-foot neighborhood center in Medford that will be anchored by Trader Joe's and REI. The first phase, which is expected to be completed in fall 2012, will create more than 250 jobs. PETCO and Ulta, a cosmetics retailer, also plan to open at the center. Mail Tribune, 11/8/2011

Unfortunately not all of these big changes are positive:

  • For the third straight year, Ash Grove Cement Co. will temporarily lay off workers at its Durkee factory due to sluggish demand for cement. The furlough will start December 5 and affect 48 of the plant's 116 employees. Baker City Herald, 10/26/2011

  • Swanson Group will shutdown its sawmills in Glendale and Roseburg for two weeks beginning November 14 and its plywood mills in Glendale and Springfield for one week starting November 21, affecting a total of 700 workers. The shutdowns are due to a normal seasonal downtime. The News-Review, 11/9/2011
