National employment, unemployment dropped slightly in June

In June, the national unemployment rate dropped slightly, to 9.5 percent (from 9.7% in May). A year ago, the national unemployment rate was also 9.5 percent.

Over the last month, total employment dropped by 125,000. The loss was due almost entirely to the layoff of 225,000 workers hired to conduct the 2010 Census. In the private (non-government) sector of the economy, employment increased by 83,000 in June.

Since January, private-sector employment has increased by 593,000 but it is still nearly 8 million persons below its level at the start of the recession.

More details are available in the press release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The information includes employment changes by industry.
