Local News: Economic Forecast 2010

Last week the Register-Guard newspaper of Eugene reported on a local, annual event: the 2010 Economic Forecast.

The topic? Where the economy is headed.

The overall message? It's going to be a long, slow recovery, but Oregon and the Eugene area are seeing some signs of improvement.

Speakers included Tim Duy of the University of Oregon, Joe Cortright of Impresa (a Portland-area consulting firm), our very own Brian Rooney (an Employment Department economist in Eugene), and many others.

According to the article, "Cortright said the Eugene-Springfield community, with the University of Oregon as a key ingredient, has the right recipe for a 'knowledge-based economy' that may well lead to long-term economic health..."

The article also cites Duy's work on economic indicators. "Duy said his monthly economic index began to indicate as early as the middle of last summer that the recession had ended. But he said improvements have been incremental at best over the past several months, and progress won’t be dramatic in the months ahead."

If you'd like to know more about what happened at the event, please see the article in the Eugene Register-Guard
