August unemployment rates ranged from 7.2% to 18.8% in Oregon's 36 counties. Nearly every county had a higher unemployment rate in August than in July, while four counties were essentially unchanged over the month and three counties experienced declining unemployment.
Gilliam was the county with the lowest unemployment rate (7.2%) -- a title it has held for the 10 of the last 12 months.
Tied at the top were Crook County and Harney County, both at 18.8% unemployment. Crook's unemployment rate has been the highest in the state since January.
All counties also have higher unemployment rates than one year ago.
Harney County has seen the largest rise; it's unemployment rate was 9.6% in August 2008. That's a rise of 9.2 percentage points.
On the other end, Wheeler County has seen the smallest rise over the last year, going from 6.3% to 8.7%
