Job Losses Slow, Unemployment Rate Rises

National employment and unemployment figures for the month of May were released today. The new stats indicate that there were 345,000 jobs lost across the country in May- about half the average monthly loss since January. Manufacturing took the brunt of jobs losses in March, declining 156,000. The total number of jobs lost since the beginning of the recession (in December 2007) has now reached 6 million.

The number of unemployed increased by 787,000 to a total of 14.5 million. The unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent from 8.9 percent in April.
