Business Happenings Around the State

The business world is a busy place! Even during this recession, when many businesses are reducing their workforce or closing down, there are still businesses beginning and growing. Here are just a few of the changes around the state this week:

· The Commodore Hotel in Astoria has reopened after 45 years and a substantial renovation. It has 10 sleeping rooms that share common bathrooms and eight suites. Daily Astorian, 5-8-09

· Nike Inc. is laying off 500 workers at its Beaverton headquarters as part of a worldwide restructuring that includes about 1,750 job cuts. Portland Business Journal, 5-14-09

· Continued soft global demand for wood products led Erickson Air-Crane to lay off 14 people from its logging support department in Central Point. Medford Mail Tribune, 5-19-09
· The owner of RV manufacturer Northwood Manufacturing purchased the defunct Fleetwood plant near Island City and plans to hire back 100 hourly workers plus office and other support personnel. The Observer, 5-18-09

· Flying Finn Sandwich Shop has opened in Turner. Statesman Journal, 5-17-09
