U.S. Employment Situation - July 2014

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning that total nonfarm employment increased by 209,000 in July 2014. The average monthly gain over the past three months was 245,000, while the average gain over the past year was 214,000.

Professional and business services added 47,000 jobs in July and has added 648,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
Over the year, total nonfarm employment increased by 2,570,000 jobs. This is the highest over-the-year gain since 2006.  
The unemployment rate for July changed little, increasing from 6.1 percent to 6.2 percent. The total number of unemployed persons, as well as the long-term unemployed (27 weeks or more), also changed little in July.
